Our School
The Rotterdam International Secondary School (RISS) at the Wolfert van Borselen School was established in 1987 to provide educational facilities for the children of the international community living in and around Rotterdam.
Since that time the number of students attending the RISS has gone from 7 in one class to 165 over grades 6 - 12. Our first group of candidates sat the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) exams in 1990 and the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme was introduced in 1991.
RISS has a current population of more than 165 students ranging from 11 to 19 years of age.
Our curriculum is international in character and prepares our students for the IGCSE (14-16 years) and IB(16-19 years) examinations. Students aged 11-13 join the Foundation Course. Students leaving RISS may go on to colleges and universities throughout the world or transfer with ease to other international schools.
The language of instruction is English. Students are encouraged to maintain or further develop their own language skills and to take pride in their own culture. It is possible to do IB and IGCSE examinations in certain “own language” studies and we encourage our students, where possible, to do this. In many instances, it may result in the students receiving a bilingual diploma. This assists the students tremendously if they want to return to their home country for higher education.
